Paul Maxwell
Paul Maxwell was an American sculptor, painter, and printmaker, credited with the creation of “stencil-casting.” He was born on September 17, 1925, in Frost Prairie, Arkansas, and later studied art at Principia College in Illinois. Maxwell founded Oklahoma City’s Contemporary Arts Foundation, shaping the culture of the Southwest for years to come. His influence was longlasting, and his work is celebrated in a variety of exhibits.
Stencil-Casting Patent
Maxwell patented an original artistic medium and process known as “stencil-casting.” Similar to silkscreening, this process gave Maxwell meticulous control and expansive versatility. During stencil-casting, there are no restrictions on dimensions or surface materials can include paper, vinyl, wood, or fabric.
Notable Awards and Recognition
His artwork has been shown at public and private exhibits around the United States. Maxwell earned several awards throughout his artistic career. In 1954, he won the Onderdonk Memorial Award in San Antonio, Texas. At the New York City World’s Fair in 1964, Maxwell held a solo exhibition of his work.
