Who Is Joan Miro?
Among the famous artists of the 20th century, Joan Miro is one of the most renowned. In the early 20th century, various art movements such as Fauvism, Cubism, and Surrealism sprouted due to the current philosophies, including the teachings of Sigmund Freud and Marxism. While Joan Miro worked alongside his contemporaries and created similar works, this artist stands alone as having a unique and remarkable style.
Joan Miro Biography
Joan Miro is a Spanish Catalan artist who lived from 1893-1983. He was born in Barcelona to a father who was a watchmaker and a mother who was a goldsmith. From his youth, Miro had exposure to the arts and began creating as young as eight years old.
Miro’s artistic career began as early as 1907 when he enrolled in La Llotja fine art academy. In 1911, he overcame a serious case of typhoid, during which point he transferred from pursuing both business and art to solely pursuing art. He later went to school at Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. Miro began spending time in Paris and in Montroig, France. In 1919 his first solo exhibition was in Paris, France, in 1921.
His vast portfolio of paintings, drawings, and sculptures led him the honor of the Guggenheim International Award in 1958. In 1975, his hometown of Barcelona established a museum dedicated to his artwork alone called the Fundació Joan Miro, and in 1980, he won the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in Spain.
The Artwork of Joan Miro
The early artwork of Joan Miro is greatly inspired by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cezanne, which art experts have defined as Miro’s Fauvist period. During his time in France his art reflected cubist elements, but in 1923-1924, his famous painting called “The Tilled Field,” defined his style as people know it today.
What set Miro apart from all the other artists is his creative method and form. One quote by him expresses how he came to create what he did, “I’d come home to my Paris studio in Rue Blomet at night, I’d go to bed, and sometimes I hadn’t any supper. I saw things, and jotted them down in a notebook. I saw shapes on the ceiling.” He also was not afraid of mistakes or imperfections, but rather, invited a careless splatter of paint, or intentionally crumpled or wet his paper. These imperfections helped lead him weave out the poetry of each piece. Miro’s content used the modern style as a base, but produced a clear semblance of reality coming forth or juxtaposed to the surreal. Zimmerman Editions has several of his better hand-signed original litho prints in inventory as well as some particularly nice, colorful posters.
