History and Career Highlights
On December 31, 1869, Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France. It wasn’t until 1889 that Matisse first started to paint, discovering the passion that would fuel his successful career. In 1891, he studied art under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau at the Académie Julian in Paris, France. By the year 1896, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts showcased five of his paintings. Matisse started as a post-impressionist, but later evolved his artistic style and led the Fauvism movement in 1900. From the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, his paintings and sculptures have been featured in galleries and exhibitions all around the world.
