Behrens was born on August 20, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. At seventeen, he started drawing and exploring his passion for the arts. He refined his sharp artistic skills at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a master’s degree in painting and sculpture. After graduation, Behrens went to work for the United States Government Printing Office while starting his professional career as an artist. He passed away on April 14, 2014, after a long and fruitful art career.
Artistic Technique and Vision
Instead of a standard paintbrush, Howard Behrens used a palette knife to create his original works. He preferred this technique due to the control of the tool and the bold aesthetic it achieved. Often, his paintings shared a common theme of love, women, and travel.
